LWP Freelance Writing Blueprint (AKA that time I tried to build a writing course) The writing course that turned into a book… What’s the most effective way to learn freelance writing? Yet another course, or a book you can carry in your pocket? If you’ve been reading this website for a minute, you remember the course that was being built. Here’s how that turned into a pocket-sized, digestible writing guide for the AI era. Back in 2025, I started building a freelance writing course. Drunk with a newly minted advanced AI prompting certificate, I used large language models (LLMs) to build a custom GPT that would match my style and help me draft course modules. Then ChatGPT 5.0 dropped. IYKYK. At the same time, I was doing more book-length work. The writing course felt more like chapters and how-to guides than video modules. A book was born: Future-Proof Your Freelance Writing Career. Instead of creating yet another online course (are we tired of online courses yet?), it made more sense to write a book. And that book is finally going through final edits. Who is Future-Proof Your Freelance Writing Career for? This book is for: aspiring freelance writers journalists transitioning into freelancing writers exploring freelancing while keeping their day jobs professionals in any industry who want to move into freelance writing What’s covered in the book? There are four sections: The Writer’s Dilemma – how writing has changed since LLMs came on the scene and how to mentally position yourself as a creative and a business person. Money Matters – how to frame your value and understand the drivers of financially sustainable freelance writing. Drill Down – how to find your sweet spot, polish your offerings, and land clients. Stay in the Game – how to create systems that work for you and build a long-term writing career. Why is this a book and not a writing course? Let me turn the question: how many times do you actually finish a course? There are two reasons I decided to write a book instead of a course. First, the market has course fatigue. Everyone offers a course, and they’re extremely time consuming to build (even with LLMs and “automated” course builders). Don’t get me wrong, I love buying courses. I have tons of logins to unfinshed courses cluttering my password manager. But you don’t need a ten-week course to learn freelance writing. Second, a book is an affordable way for anyone to learn. My ultimate goal was to make this information available to as many people as possible. When I started freelance writing, there were lots of free, credible, REAL writers offering advice. These days, I feel like it’s 90% AI-generated slop masquerading as freelance writing advice. Yes, that’s a cynical take. But I wanted to create something anyone could access for a pretty affordable price. Is it hard to become a freelance writer? No, but it’s harder than it used to be. You’re competing against LLMs that can generate hundreds of words in less than a minute. However, language models can’t replace editorial judgement. It can’t fact-check itself, and human writers are still needed to create readable, credible content. When can I buy the book? It will be available in summer 2026. I’ll post an update on this page when it launches. In the meantime, sign up for email updates using the subscribe form on this site. If you’re a journalist, you can download my journalism to copywriting quick-start guide. Yes, you can still create a career as a freelance writer. This book will show you how.
